refused (a villanelle)

February 10, 2010

If given a choice, what will they choose?
If they do stubbornly hold their desires?
Will broken lights be again refused?

The beauteous rose, or the prickling briar?
The worthless rocks, or the luminous sapphire?
If given a choice, what will they choose?

The earthly rubbish they do admire,
And risk being chaffed in holy fire.
Will broken lights be again refused?

Stars shine high; heaven much higher.
hell brings homely comforts of a mire.
If given a choice, what will they choose?

The virgins lacked the oil required;
some thrown out for the wrong attire.
Will broken lights be again refused?

The carpenter reconnected the wire;
with his own blood, our hearts acquired.
If given a choice, what will they choose?
Will broken lights be again refused?
